Andrew Tompkins

Dr Andrew Tompkins is a Lecturer in Modern European History whose research focuses on transnational interactions within Europe’s Cold War blocs. His first monograph, entitled Better Active than Radioactive! Anti-Nuclear Protest in 1970s France and West Germany, examined transnational networks of protest against nuclear energy.

Andrew’s current work is a comparative project about everyday life along Germany’s post-1945 borders with France and Poland, specifically examining how residents along the Rhine and Oder rivers put national borders to use in their own lives.

Andrew previously worked as a Stipendiary Lecturer in History at the Balliol College, University of Oxford and as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
